Year 5 Home Learning Info Wk Beg 13.7.2020

10th July 2020Natalie Jewitt

Hi Year 5!

We hope you are all well and safe.

Well, what can we say?! What a year it has been… Quite unbelievable the way it has come to a close. Obviously, with this being the last week, we won’t be setting you quite the same content as we have done. We very much appreciate that most of you have been working extremely hard over the past few weeks. Keep doing your very best year 5 and keep up with the basics at the very least – so that it isn’t such a shock to the system when you return in September!

For now, here is your final Home Learning Information for the week beginning 13.7.2020 (your LAST week in year 5!).

Don’t forget, all of our previous week’s home learning guidance is backed up on Google Classroom should you like to access it over the holiday period. You just need to log in with your school email address to access it, or click HERE.

Do feedback any technical issues and we will try to resolve them for you asap!

Guidance Overview

We have provided the usual resources in the Home Learning files, however some are more simplified:

  • Overview (timetable ideas and useful links)
  • Monday – Friday files (resources specific to that day as per the overview)
  • Maths (starters and daily tasks)
  • English (useful prompts, word of the week and grammar activities)
  • Spelling and Grammar (part of daily tasks or English file)
  • Reading (part of daily tasks)
  • Classroom Secrets Home Learning Packs (French themed this week!)
  • EAL (useful resources for those receiving support from EMTRAS)
  • Something a bit different – (exactly that!)

The afternoons focus on Art this week – a war artist and sculptor named Henry Moore. There is a different lesson each day, with an accompanying Powerpoint for lessons 1-5. Further resources are provided for lessons 1 and 3.

White Rose Maths

White Rose lessons continue to be back to normal this week, with no need for alternate provision. The standard home learning videos on their website are those which you will need to follow for lessons 1 – 4. We have provided you with the necessary materials and a PDF with links to the videos as usual.

Third Space Learning Independent Recap Activities

For those of you looking to give your children extra independent Maths recap practice, we have compiled some activity sheets from a company called ‘Third Space Learning’ who provide ‘Fluent in Five’ which you may already be familiar with. The sheets are comprised of an Arithmetic section, Practice and Challenge. Answer sheets are also provided. Click here or look in the Maths folder to see what you think. There are new sheets for each week and they are available for all year groups.

You can also continue to access Oak National Academy, BBC Bitesize Daily Learning and Classroom Secrets should you wish to mix up your daily programme of learning.

Don’t forget: you continue to have access to Purple Mash, Education City, Lexia Core 5, Mathletics, Times Table Rockstars, Epic! Books and Discovery Espresso.

Summer Revision

We will not be supplying weekly guidance over the holiday period, however a file has been created containing further Maths and SPaG revision which can be accessed over the holidays should you wish to – this is NOT compulsory. It is there for those who would like to use it. Click here to access the Summer Revision File.

Request from Miss Humphrey for those currently in Miss Sanderson’s class:

Please could you email a ‘headshot’ photograph of your child – shoulders up over – to her email address: [email protected]

This will used as part of their artwork and class display in September – some of the children may recall seeing a display outside of Miss Humphrey’s room. The photographs will be printed on A4 and cut in half length-ways. The children will then paint the other half of their face using watercolours in order to create a complete self-portrait. Any queries, email Miss Humphrey at the above address.

Don’t forget, reports will be available for collection on Wednesday 15th between 1:30 and 2:30pm. See you then!

We hope you continue to stay safe and well. You’ve got this year 5!

Take good care all,

Mrs Tuff and Miss Sanderson ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚

On a personal note…

I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you for being wonderful year 5. You may have seen by now that I am leaving Ashley Primary School at the end of this academic year – one of the toughest decisions I’ve had to make! Whilst I have been teaching at the school for 3 years, as most of you know, I was a teaching assistant here long before that, first joining Ashley Primary in 2010. It really does feel like I’m leaving family behind and I will miss you all.

It has been a strange few days beginning to sort out my classroom – who knew you could fit so much into a cupboard! I want you to know that you have helped me make some fantastic memories over the last few months, I am just so sorry we didn’t get to end the year together and enjoy cakes and films on the last day.

Don’t forget how amazing, unique and strong you all are. Most of all, thank you for giving me the opportunity to be your teacher and to help you learn. I too, have learned from you all.

I’ll send you a postcard… Now that I can do this Google Meet malarkey, maybe we could have a virtual catch up some day…

Take care everyone and see you soon.

My best wishes and Good Luck in all that you do,

Miss S xxx

Year 5 Home Learning Guidance Wk beg: 22.6.20

19th June 2020Natalie Jewitt

Hi Year 5!

We hope you are all well and safe.

Here is your weekly update, Home Learning Guidance and materials for the week beginning 22.6.2020.

It is great to see more of you accessing Google Classroom. If you haven’t already accessed it, you simply need your login details for the school site and then a code which you can be provided with by your class teacher. The icon is shown above. You must access it using your own school email.

This will enable you to access our shared Class Drive where we have backed up all of your Home Learning Guidance from previous weeks for easier access. This means you can go back and check out any resources, including all of the Classroom Secrets Home Learning packs you may not have managed to have a go at yet and makes life a little easier for finding older resources all in one place, rather than searching through old web posts. We hope you will find this useful. Do feedback any technical issues and we will try to resolve them for you asap!

Local Heroes Project

Your new project for the next two weeks focuses on history and local heroes – click here to access the file directly.

Your tasks are to:

  1. Research the life of Grace Darling and find out why she became a local hero.
  2. Why is Grace Darling remembered?
  3. Picture Evidence: study an image of Grace Darling and use it to extract information in order to create a piece of narrative writing.
  4. Victorian slang in modern writing.
  5. Create a lighthouse model.
  6. Think of your own local hero and write a biography on them.

  • Reading (part of daily tasks)
  • Classroom Secrets Home Learning Packs (fully differentiated)
  • EAL (useful resources for those receiving support from EMTRAS)
  • Something a bit different – (exactly that!)

We have also included a ‘Science‘ folder. In it, you will find the next two lessons of our topic ‘Forces’ which we would have been studying in school. They have been slightly adapted to accommodate the fact you are at home and may not have access to certain resources. We will follow this up with another two lessons next week.

White Rose Maths

Please note, that the first two lessons of this week’s usual schedule for White Rose Maths has already been covered by us earlier on in the lockdown. When they partnered with BBC Bitesize, their timetable changed slightly. To accommodate this, they have provided alternative lessons for the weeks where this might occur. This is something we are doing this week for Monday and Tuesday and an ‘alternative’ lesson pdf containing video links has been put in the files for you as well as the resources. If you do go on to White Rose‘s website, do please ensure you are viewing the ‘alternative’ provision which is provided in a link alongside the standard weekly lessons.

This will hopefully mean you can go back and check out any resources, including all of the Classroom Secrets Home Learning packs you may not have managed to have a go at yet and makes life a little easier for finding older resources all in one place, rather than searching through old web posts. We hope you will find this useful. Do feedback any technical issues and we will try to resolve them for you asap!

Nature Watch Project

Your project continues into this week, with a focus on nature and the outdoors – click here to access the file directly.

Your tasks are to:

  1. Conduct a mini-beast hunt.
  2. Create your own wormery.
  3. Label the parts of a flower.
  4. What is Pollination?
  5. Grow your own sunflower and record observations.
  6. Art: choose a flower or plant from your own garden and draw it…

We’d love to see some of your end products – take some pics and share them with us via email or Class Dojo!

Guidance Overview

We have provided the usual resources in the Home Learning files including:

  • Overview (timetable ideas and useful links)
  • Monday – Friday files (resources specific to that day as per the overview)
  • Maths (starters and daily tasks)
  • English (useful prompts, word of the week and grammar activities)
  • Spelling and Grammar (part of daily tasks or English file)
  • Reading (part of daily tasks)
  • Classroom Secrets Home Learning Packs (fully differentiated)
  • EAL (useful resources for those receiving support from EMTRAS)
  • Something a bit different – (exactly that!)

We have also included a ‘Science‘ folder. In it, you will find the next two lessons of our topic ‘Forces’ which we would have been studying in school. They have been slightly adapted to accommodate the fact you are at home and may not have access to certain resources. We will follow this up with another two lessons next week.

White Rose Maths

Please note, that this week’s usual schedule for White Rose Maths has already been covered by us earlier on in the lockdown. When they partnered with BBC Bitesize, their timetable changed slightly. To accommodate this, they have provided alternative lessons for the weeks where this might occur. This is something we are doing this week and an ‘alternative’ lesson pdf containing video links has been put in the files for you as well as the resources. If you do go on to White Rose‘s website, do please ensure you are viewing the ‘alternative’ provision which is provided in a link alongside the standard weekly lessons.

If you need any login reminders, just email your class teacher at the following addresses:

[email protected]

[email protected]

You can also ask to be added to our Class Dojo by emailing us at the above addresses where we can answer any support questions (privately or as class info).

We hope you continue to stay safe and well. We are here if you need us.

Take care all,

Miss Sanderson and Mrs Tuff ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚

Year 5 Home Learning Guidance Wk Beg: 8.6.2020

By Natalie Jewitt5th June 2020

Hi Year 5!

We hope you are all well and safe.

Here is your weekly update, Home Learning Guidance and materials for the week beginning 8.6.2020.

First of all, some of you will already be aware that we have begun inviting you to access Google Classroom through the school website. You simply need your login details for the school site and then a code which you can be provided with by your class teacher. The icon is shown above. You must access it using your own school email.

This will enable you to access our shared Class Drive where we have backed up all of your Home Learning Guidance from previous weeks for easier access. Whilst we will continue to post the guidance here on the web, we will begin uploading it into the shared drive as well. This will hopefully mean you can go back and check out any resources you may not have managed to have a go at yet and makes life a little easier for finding older resources all in one place, rather than searching through old web posts. We hope you will find this useful. Do feedback any technical issues and we will try to resolve them for you asap! (Probably with the assistance of Mrs Jewitt – although sshh, I haven’t asked her yet ๐Ÿ˜‰ .)

Our next Google Meet Video Conference is currently set to be Thursday 11th June at 4:30pm. We will provide further information about this closer to the time, however if you would like to join in, just let your class teacher know via email or Class Dojo. The technical hitches are fixed! Links cannot be given out too soon in case they change for safeguarding purposes. However if you log in to Google Classroom using your class code (available from your teacher), you can then be sent the specific code / link to gain access to the ‘Meeting Room’.

This week, we will be hosting a quiz! Bring your question and see who you can confuse!

Year 5 Home Learning Guidance Wk Beg: 1.6.2020

29th May 2020Natalie Jewitt

Hi Year 5!

Happy last half term! (Quite unbelievable!)

We hope you’re all having as best a half term break as you can and have stayed safe and well. We’ve certainly had some lovely weather!

If you’ve been following us online for a while, you should hopefully have a good idea of how these online resources work by now. ๐Ÿ™‚

For those of you who have joined us more recently, these learning resources are available as guidance to help you carry out your home learning in a more structured way should you prefer to.

To access these files, click here, or on the links in the text below:

We will provide you with a daily overview of tasks and recommended resources (either available to download or online). This is an example only and we have provided alternative lessons should you wish to follow those instead. We also provide Classroom Secrets Home Learning Packs similar to those issued in the first week of school closure, for those who prefer to work in that manner. The packs are available for all year groups to cater for any differentiation needs.

As a rule, we follow White Maths Home Learning which is aligned with BBC Daily Bitesize. These topics are part of the national curriculum and do follow topics we would have otherwise covered in school and use similar, if not identical resources. There was however a small overlap in provision from White Rose at the outset of lockdown, therefore there may be a week or two where the activities we provide through them do not match up with BBC Bitesize. White Rose do however provide really helpful learning videos which can be found on their website, or by clicking on the links in the pdf provided in the files. We highly recommend using these alongside the worksheet resources we provide.

We also provide the opportunity to follow an eBook on a weekly basis and undertake tasks related to it. The text comes from ‘Serial Mash’ (Purple Mash). This week, you will be beginning a new text which is called ‘Film Seen’ and we have included a guidance sheet to help you locate it online. We hope you enjoy it!

Our files are organised into days and categories for ease of purpose. The English and Maths file contain useful resources you may need to use more than once or access daily; the weekday files contain resources specific to that day. The EAL folder contains resources which have been provided to support those who have English as an Additional Language support through EMTRAS, and the ‘Something a bit different‘ file is just that – something a bit different to take your mind off the everyday mundane!

We also provide you with a project which runs for two weeks. So far, we have covered a project of your own choosing, Rivers, The Titanic and The Lambton Worm – the latter of which will continue as your current project into this week.

We have been using Class Dojo to keep in touch with parents and share useful links etc. If you have not already joined us, parents, you can email your child’s class teacher on the addresses below and request to be added:

[email protected]

[email protected]

Please do get in touch with us if you need any help or support. We are here to help you!

Oak National Academy is a recommended online classroom provision which is run by teachers for children learning at home. They provide DfE approved lessons across the curriculum which can be accessed as part of a schedule, or topic. If we note a lesson of particular relevance or importance, we will signpost you, however do feel free to explore and follow this resource as suits your needs. Video guidance demonstrating how to access this resource is included in the files.

Finally, your child has access to a number of online resources including Mathletics, Lexia, Times Tables Rockstars, Epic! Books, Discovery Espresso, Education City, and Purple Mash. They also have access to their own online Google Drive through the school website where they can safely upload any work they would like to share with us. If you need any help with login reminders or how to access these sites, do ask.

Most importantly, keep up with the basics – it really will help. Reading daily, practising spellings and times tables will all help to keep your child up to speed when we return to school. It is hard to keep motivated, we absolutely understand that, and of course we all have days when we are feeling less inclined to get up and keep busy. Mental Health and Well-being is hugely important to us and must take precedence. Just do your best; bear in mind your own personal circumstances and work around those.

Here if you need us year 5!

Take Care, stay safe and be happy!
