Year 5 JS Poetry “I am……”

19th March 2020J Sanderson

Despite all that is going on at the moment, the children worked so hard this week to end their Poetry Unit in style. I am really incredibly proud of them and can’t express how much they have impressed me in terms of their tenacity and calmness in the face of much disruption. Some children asked if they could type up their latest poem to share, of course they could. So here they are.

Poems that take the everyday, ordinary objects and transform them through the use of simile, metaphor, alliteration, personification and powerful imagery.

Well done everyone – keep up your new-found poetic skills over the coming weeks 😉

5JS Sky Poetry

By J Sanderson11th March 2020

Year 5 have been working hard studying ‘Observational Poetry’ as part of our Literacy curriculum. Our most recent focus has been to use figurative language to help write poetry which brings our observations to life in ways we might not expect.

We have learned about metaphor, simile, personification, alliteration as well as revisiting relative clauses and expanded noun phrases.

Yesterday, 5JS painted their own take on the sky and today, focussed on a poem entitled ‘Sky-Artist’. We thought about the sky as though it were something entirely different – an artist’s canvas and the changing clouds and colours the pictures painted upon it.

The children then wrote their own poem about the sky using our class poem ‘Don’t be afraid’ as a structure scaffold.

What can I say? I am so impressed! You really have outdone yourselves children and although they’re now part of a wonderful display in school, I couldn’t wait to share your work with your family and friends. Take a look below! (I will add more of the children’s work as they complete it.)

Budding photographers in Year 5JS!

28th February 2019J Sanderson

I was incredibly impressed with the photographic talents and imaginations of my class today!

As part of our current Literacy topic – Observational Poetry – I asked the children to take a selection of photographs in and around our outdoor areas, but with one catch: the children had to remove themselves from the here and now, and imagine what else their captured images could represent. This was not an easy task and relied upon the children not only using their imagination, but also applying that to the literary techniques of metaphor, simile, personification, imagery and expanded noun phrases.

I can honestly say I am absolutely over the moon and amazed by not only their efforts, but also the way in which they applied themselves to the task with such enthusiasm and excitement.

You have blown Mrs H and I away today children – you shared your ideas and worked so well as a team. The end product? A wonderful array of photographs and ideas which will form the basis of our next Literacy lesson: writing a poem using metaphor and expanded noun phrases, in the style and structure of a poem we plan to study in class.

Well done 5JS! You should be proud of yourselves. I’m fairly certain I have some future photographers, poets and artists in my midst!

Miss Sanderson 🙂

1KL – writing the date!

By K Lawson12th September 2016
Writing the long date in Literacy! IMG_2083

We have been practising writing the long date in our literacy books today. Miss Lawson timed us – we only had FIVE MINUTES to write the whole thing! We had to write ‘Monday 12th September 2016.’ However, nearly everyone managed to beat the timer (and write neatly) so we were allowed to move up the rocket.
