Practise your French!

By J Sanderson19th June 2020

Our local authority Languages Co-ordinator, Mme Smith, has very kindly shared some easy to access resources/links which you can use from home to continue practising your French language skills.

Click HERE to access the guidance.

Each unit has a series of video links, or links to songs which will help to reinforce pre-existing learning, as well as introduce new topics.

So that you know the units your child would have been studying, I have included a copy of our Modern Foreign Languages overview below, however in brief:

Year 3: units 1 – 3

Year 4: units 4 – 6

Year 5: units 7 – 9

Year 6: units 10 – 12

Of course, this is variable depending upon continuation of units across year groups according to a review of prior learning.

Download (PDF, 89KB)

Please feel free to explore these resources from unit 1 onward; according to your child’s needs and preferred interests!

Amusez-vous bien !

Miss Sanderson 🙂

Great French Language Challenge!

By J Sanderson15th May 2020

Bonjour!

Hi everyone,

As part of our Modern Foreign Languages curriculum at Ashley Primary School, Key Stage 2 study the French language.

I thought the following activities would give you something a little different to challenge yourself with whilst you’re staying safe at home with your families and also help you to keep in touch with your French learning!

The Great French Language Challenge is made up of a number of fun activities to do with your families  which focus on the French language – in fact some of them you might need to ask for a little help with and make it a real family challenge!  You could even join up with class mates online (be e-safe aware!) and create a socially distanced team!

If you manage to complete the French challenge, why not try the second challenge and choose a different language to focus on? Can you find any similarities between that language and your French challenges? Which words sound the same or have similar roots? Did any words surprise you?

I appreciate given the current situation it might be tricky to do one or two of the challenges, for example trying foods from that country which you may not have tried before: shopping isn’t straight forward at the moment, and I don’t want you to spend any money on this! For that reason, you can change any challenge that proves too difficult to complete for one that you make up yourself – how imaginative can you be?

To download the files, click on the images below.

Go on! Why not have a go – discuss with your families and compare ideas with friends. Most of all, have fun! 🙂

Anyone who manages to complete the challenge can send me an email at jsanderson@ashley.s-tyneside.sch.uk with the subject line ‘Great French Language Challenge’ or ‘Great Languages Challenge’.

Parents, so that your child can be rewarded with their awesome certificate, please include their name (first name and initial of surname only) and class – or if it was a family effort, maybe create a team name and send me that instead! (I still need a class for reference however 😉 )

Bonne chance! (Good luck!)

For your information, there are also some great activities on Education City (you will need your login details) and BBC Bitesize if you fancy brushing up on your French.

https://go.educationcity.com/level/index/4

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/subjects/z39d7ty

Nothing beats listening to a language to help promote the learning of it, so maybe try and tune into some French songs online as well. Here are just a few as an example, but there are loads out there – you might find some cartoons as well:

British Sign Language

By J Sanderson30th March 2020

If you’re looking for something a little different while you’re staying safe at home… How about learning British Sign Language?

My daughter and I have decided to do just that and it’s really a wonderful skill to learn – not just for yourself, but to open up your ability to communicate with Deaf people and those who are deaf following hearing loss.

Like learning any new language, it’s also a lot of fun!

I’ve added the Fingerspelling guide for right/left handed below, and a little message for you to interpret! 👍🏻 Miss S 🌈

8th March 2020Natalie Jewitt

This year the children at Ashley Primary School will be participating in some sporting activities on Friday 13th March to support Sport Relief.  They may come into school wearing their sports clothing and can bring in some money (suggested donation amount is £1) to donate to the charity.

Thank you as always for your continued support.

International Week – Year 2 (JL Class)

21st February 2020Natalie Jewitt

Our focus was Scotland. We asked questions and found out about the country using the internet, books and our own experiences.

We enjoyed reading Katie Morag and the Two Grandmothers by Mairi Hedderwick. During literacy we wrote about the appearance, behaviour and personality of Grannie Island and Grandma Mainland.

On Friday, it was non-uniform day and the children all looked fantastic. In PE, we learned about The Highland Games and adapted a few to create The Ashley Games. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed ‘Toss the Welly’, Highland Dancing (The Flying Scotsman) and ‘Toss the Caber’.

At snack time, we ate shortbread (courtesy of Mr Jewitt) and drank milk or water.  Mrs Jewitt had a sneaky Irn-Bru!

Mrs Todd also joined us and read The Kilted Coo by Rachel McGaw. It received a thumbs up from us!

Miss Davison really enjoyed watching an episode of Katie Morag during an indoor break!

5JS Greek Food Critique!

By J Sanderson12th February 2020

Year 5 JS have had a fantastic time so far this week learning all about Greece, Ancient Greek history, religion and mythology. As well as this, we’ve managed to find the time to squeeze in some rather tasty Greek food sampling!

The children had a fantastic afternoon trying out some new tastes – some of which went down a treat, others less so…

I’m really impressed with some of the vocabulary the children found to describe the food’s appearance, aroma, taste and texture. A firm favourite was the pitta with Greek yoghurt.

I’m fairly certain most children found something new which they enjoyed today – thank you for giving it a go children. Next stop, Greek Myth planning!

Miss Sanderson 🙂

International Week 2018

By Natalie Jewitt8th February 2018

We have had a brilliant week learning all about France.  We have tried French Food (no snails!), made pancakes, or should I say crêpes, used the iPads to find out interesting facts and we have been learning new words in French.  We’ve also tried our hand at painting in the style of Monet!  Today has been brilliant for my class as I haven’t spoken to them at all!  You’ll see why in the photos!

International Week in Reception

By Natalie Jewitt18th February 2017
Sweden

This week in Reception we have have been learning all about Sweden.  We have been looking at where Sweden is on a map, finding out about some of the amazing buildings in Sweden, tasting Swedish food (all the way from Ikea), learning to speak Swedish, playing Swedish games and finding out all about Swedish culture and history.  We had a very special visit from Mrs Nicholson who was born in Sweden – Lucas and Isaac, her sons,  are both part of our Reception.
